General Questions
Japanese selvedge denim refers to denim made in Japan using traditional production methods. It is woven on slower machines called shuttle looms, which allows for more control during the weaving process. This results in a fabric that is dense, durable, and often shows subtle variations in texture and color.
Selvedge refers to the finished edge of denim that’s formed naturally during weaving, without any extra stitching. On traditional shuttle looms, the fabric is woven to a fixed width, and the edge automatically locks itself, preventing fraying. This edge is usually visible when the jeans are cuffed and indicates a more traditional way of making denim.
Heritage Clothing refers to clothing that combines classic, timeless designs with high-quality materials and traditional craftsmanship. These garments are inspired by historical models and are often more durable than modern mass-produced items.
The majority of our selection is sourced directly from Japan. We import most pieces ourselves and travel to Japan several times a year to work closely with the makers and maintain long-standing relationships with our producers.

Ordering Process
Your invoice is included with your order, so you will have it when your package arrives. We will also email you a digital copy once your order has been completed.
Changes and cancellations are possible if the order has not yet been processed for shipping. Please contact us by email so that your change or cancellation request can be checked immediately.
We regularly reorder many of our items, while others are only available for a short time. On the product page, you can click on your desired size and sign up with your e-mail to receive a notification when the item is back in stock.
For orders shipped to Germany, a VAT rate of 19% is applied at checkout.
For orders shipped to other EU countries, the applicable VAT rate for that country will be applied.
Orders shipped outside the EU are not subject to domestic VAT; however, import duties and customs fees may be charged according to the regulations of the destination country.
Shipping and Delivery
We ship with DHL and DHL Express.
Within Germany, standard shipments are sent via DHL. All other shipments are sent with DHL Express, either as Economy Select or Express International.

Every delivery comes with a tracking code that you can use to track the progress of your order. This code will be sent to you by email when your order is shipped.
Orders over 1,000€ shipped outside the EU are subject to a mandatory customs export procedure. Following EU law, these packages must be registered and approved by customs before they can leave the EU. This process usually takes around 3-5 working days, and shipping may therefore take a little longer than usual. We’ll keep you informed at every step and are, of course, happy to answer any questions while your order is being processed.
Returns and Refunds
Any ordered item can be returned within 14 days of delivery, provided they are in original condition and all labels are attached.
For customers in Germany, please return your item via our Return Portal where you can download a free return label and return sheet. Place the item in its original packaging along with the return sheet and stick the return label on the outside of the sealed package. Then all you have to do is drop off the package at the nearest DHL branch or packing station.
For customers in the EU, please use a courier service of your choice. We kindly ask you to send the parcel insured and with tracking to ensure a smooth process. Place the item in its original packaging along with the order invoice and leave a note that says ‘Return’.

For non-EU customers, please use our DHL Express Return Label to best ensure a smooth process through customs. The label costs 19,95€ for returns within Europe, and 29,95€ for returns outside of Europe. Please read the following information on how to purchase and use the label.
IMPORTANT: Goods returned to us from third countries (non-EU states) may only qualify as returned goods under specific conditions. If properly declared and identified as such, these returns may be exempt from import duties. Please note that we do not assume any responsibility for customs duties, import VAT, or other charges arising from incorrect, incomplete, or missing customs declarations. Shipments sent freight-collect or subject to outstanding customs charges will not be accepted. Any costs incurred as a result may be deducted from a refund in accordance with sections 6 and 7 below.
To help ensure a smooth return process, the following steps are provided for guidance only and does not constitute a complete or legally binding instruction. If you are in doubt about handling the return, we strongly recommend that you also consult your local customs authorities or shipping provider regarding the specific requirements applicable in your country.
1. Condition of the item
Returned items must be in their original condition. Wherever possible, goods should be returned in their original packaging to prevent transport damage. Please note that if items are returned without their original packaging, we reserve the right to charge for any resulting loss in value.
2. Paying for and receiving the return label
Send us an email at onlineshop@burgundschild.com informing us about your return and which items you wish to return and wish to keep. We will then respond with a payment request via Shopify for the return label.
3. Prepare the return documents
When your payment has been registered, we will send you the following documents: the return label, the order invoice, the commercial return invoice, and the customs declaration. Please sign the customs declaration in the field “Datum und Unterschrift des Absenders”.
4. Prepare the shipment
Place the returned item in its original packaging and seal the package. Place all documents except the return label in a transparent document pouch and attach it to the outside of the package. Then attach the return label. On the outside of the package, write “Returned Goods – Relief Claimed. EU Origin” with a marker.
5. Shipping
The shipping label must be clearly legible and must not contain any conflicting or misleading information. We recommend using a carrier experienced in international returns and customs clearance. Please check the applicable shipping conditions and customs requirements before dispatching the return. We strongly advise selecting a service that includes tracking.
6. Returns, costs, and deadlines
The customer is responsible for the direct costs of returning the goods. If customs duties or taxes are incurred due to improper or insufficient declaration, we reserve the right to deduct such costs from any refund due. The return shipment must be dispatched no later than 14 days after you have exercised your right of withdrawal. Once the goods have been received by us, your return will be processed without undue delay. Please retain proof of shipment and the tracking number until receipt has been confirmed.
7. Liability
We shall not be liable for delays or additional costs resulting from shipments being held by customs due to incorrect or incomplete declarations. If a return is not properly declared as returned goods and/or does not include the required documentation, resulting in the imposition of import duties or taxes, responsibility for such charges rests solely with the sender.
The postage for returns within Germany is free of charge if you use our Return Portal.
For customers outside of Germany, we are unfortunately not able to cover any return costs at this point.
As soon as the return has arrived and been inspected, the invoice amount will be reimbursed via the payment method you chose when ordering. It can take up to 14 days to process your return.
It is possible to return your item directly in our store, provided you have a receipt, the item is in original condition, and all labels are attached.
Unfortunately, a direct exchange of a returned item is not possible.
Once the returned item has arrived and been checked, the credit will be issued.
Care Instructions and Quality
You will usually find a size chart for the item on the product page.
