This work portrays Uoei, an important illustrated book wholesaler active in the late Edo period. He published numerous Nishikie prints by famous artists such as Utagawa Hiroshige, Hiroshige II, and Toyokuni III, the creator of this artwork.
Utagawa Kunisada, known as Toyokuni III, was born in Edo in 1786 and rose to fame through his extraordinary portraits of beautiful women and depictions of actors. With over 10,000 works, he left behind the most extensive body of work of all ukiyo-e artists of his time.
