The "1961 Type III Jacket Rigid" (Lot 557) from Levi's Vintage Clothing reconstructs the first Type III, which first appeared in the Levi's catalog in October 1961. Designed by Jack Lucier, it marked a significant change from the previous Type II: the boxy shape became narrower and more fitted, the characteristic front pleats disappeared, and two pointed chest pockets with the distinctive V-shaped seam lines gave the jacket its new silhouette. Side adjusters allow the waist to be adjusted.
The jacket is made from pre-washed denim of 100% cotton. The special dyeing process provides the deep indigo tone, which changes over time with wear, becoming lighter at folds, edges, and stressed areas. Since the denim is already pre-washed, the jacket does not have the strong shrinkage effect of unwashed rigid denim.
For the first time, the construction foregoes the copper rivets typical of earlier Levi's jackets. Two chest pockets with pointed flaps, side adjusters, and the large "E" Red Tab characterize the minimalist design of the early Type III. The short, waist-length form and the more body-hugging silhouette made Lot 557 an important link between early Levi's denim jackets and the later Trucker Jacket.
