The "40s USMC JK Mix Duck Hunter" by Nigel Cabourn is based on an original WWII US military reference and combines various camouflage and field jacket influences to create its own interpretation.
The foundation is a 1940s US Marine Corps Utility Jacket – compact in cut, functionally constructed, and clearly designed for use. Typical features include direct pocket solutions and a reduced, purpose-built construction.
The focus is on the Duck-Hunter camouflage. This multicolored camouflage pattern was developed in the WWII context for US Army and Marine Corps units and was considered technically complex to print. Each color was implemented using its own printing plates, which made the production process significantly more complex than with classic military fabrics.
The material was only used to a limited extent for selected units. Production was expensive and elaborate, which meant it was never introduced across the board in the Army. Historically, it is also mentioned that the visual proximity to other European camouflage patterns could lead to confusion in certain operational situations, which also influenced the early withdrawal of the pattern.
