The "SS39503 Cotton Linen Slubyarn Open Shirt – State of Hawaii" by Sun Surf features one of the most iconic Aloha designs ever.
The design originates from Hawaiian Togs – one of the early labels that shaped the Aloha shirt culture in Hawaii in the 1940s and 50s. These shirts were never just souvenirs, but part of everyday life on the islands – worn by locals, travelers, and the US military alike, and spread far beyond Hawaii.
At its heart is the so-called "Chop Suey" design – a typical collage aesthetic of that era. Different motifs are combined into a dense visual tapestry: Hula Girls, King Kamehameha, Aloha Tower, state coat of arms, hibiscus. A kind of visual map of Hawaii on fabric.
Sun Surf works here with an original vintage template that has been subtly reinterpreted in terms of color. The print is executed using reverse printing, which gives the surfaces a softer look and brings the aesthetic closer to aged originals.
The fabric is a cotton-linen slub yarn. Irregular yarns create movement in the surface, and the linen content provides a dry feel and airy drape.
