During World War II, US soldiers discovered the back of their jackets as a canvas. Using paint and brushes, they created designs as diverse as the men themselves: combat machines with deployment statistics, pin-up girls from magazines, memories of home, or symbols of personal pride. Each jacket became a unique piece, a statement of identity and a personal work of art.
When American troops came to Asia, impressions from there also shaped the designs. Exotic patterns, mythical creatures or legends found their way onto the fabrics – mixed with Western images of longing and adventure.
This jacket features a hand-painted female figure, so beautiful and powerful that even a dragon submits to her. Perhaps the memory of a beloved, perhaps the projection of an unattainable muse.
The M-1943 was the US Army's answer to the many different uniforms that had been in use up to that point. A field jacket that was supposed to work universally – from rain and mud to cold and wind.
