The "SS39629 Rayon Hawaiian Shirt Oriental Border" from Sugar Cane is based on a vintage Hawaiian shirt from Marlboro Sportswear from the late 1950s. While Aloha shirts were originally strongly associated with Hawaiian island culture, American manufacturers of the time developed their own variations with influences from Asian art. This model combines a classic border design with stylized cranes and shows the influence of oriental motifs on American casual wear at the time.
The shirt is made from Rayon Habutae, a fine filament rayon with a smooth surface and flowing drape. The fabric was particularly common in high-quality Hawaiian shirts of the 1940s and 1950s, as it clearly highlighted the elaborate patterns. The discharge print is worked directly into the fabric, meaning the pattern lies less on the surface and blends more naturally with the material. Over time, rayon develops its own character and a soft, worn-in surface through wear.
