The "Tiger Camouflage Shirt / John Wayne" by The Real McCoy's is based on early Tiger Stripe patterns from South Vietnam in the 1960s. Developed for on-site use, various versions quickly emerged due to local manufacturing and different interpretations of the camouflage pattern.

The name "John Wayne" became established from the pop culture of that era. This early pattern was prominently featured in the film The Green Berets (1968) starring John Wayne, which used originally based Tiger Stripe uniforms. This connection has become an established term in the collector and repro scene for this early, less standardized version.

Characteristic is the more open, more restless stripe pattern compared to later, more standardized versions.
