The N-1 deck jacket was originally developed for the US Navy in the 1940s. As part of the Buzz Rickson's x William Gibson collection, the "N-1 Leather Jacket" appears in deep black. The originally brown horse leather is dyed black through an elaborate "pigment finishing". The brown core appears in the stressed areas when worn and gives the jacket a unique patina. The idea for an all-black collection was inspired by Buzz Rickson's fictional black MA-1 jacket, which the science fiction author designed for his protagonist in his book "Pattern Recognition". Buzz Rickson's brought the never-before-seen jacket to life and thus laid the foundation for the unique militaria collaboration "Type Black".
