The "Avignon" by Paraboot is a classic derby with a "Bout Chasse," a toe design characteristic of French hunting and hiking shoes. The model is named after Avignon in the south of France. The Avignon’s traditional last shape features a distinctive, almond-shaped toe.
This version is crafted from shell cordovan, a rare horse leather from a particularly dense, fibrous layer of the horse's hide in the hindquarters. Paraboot sources its cordovan from the Horween tannery in Chicago. The leather is vegetable-tanned and, due to its unique fiber structure, develops a smooth, deep finish. Unlike many other leathers, cordovan does not form deep creases when worn, but rather characteristic waves. Over time, an intense luster develops through wear and polishing.
The Avignon is made using Norwegian welt construction and is leather-lined. The visible stitching connects the upper to the sole construction and is one of the signature features of Paraboot’s robust manufacturing method.
The natural rubber sole is also closely linked to the history of Paraboot. In 1926, while traveling in the USA, Rémy Richard discovered rubber galoshes and developed the idea of using natural rubber for his own leather shoes. In 1927, he registered the name Paraboot – "Para" refers to the Amazon port through which latex was exported, "boot" to the rubber shoes Richard had encountered in the USA. Paraboot still manufactures its rubber soles in-house today.
