M-51 Parka US Army Fishtail Olive

The M-51 Parka by Buzz Rickson’s has its origins in the military, but quickly became part of a very different world.

Created in the early 1950s as a further development of the M-48, it was part of a sophisticated layering system for cold weather conditions. Generously cut and functionally designed, it was made to be worn over uniforms and additional layers. With the switch to cotton-nylon oxford, it became lighter, more robust, and more practical for everyday use in the field.

After its military service, the parka found its way to the streets. In the 1960s, it was adopted by the Mod scene in England – often worn over suits, as protection on scooters, and as an essential part of the look. Conceived for utility, it became iconic for its style.

From there, the M-51 has endured for decades. Frequently revisited, but rarely as true to the original as it is here.

Buzz Rickson’s stays true to the military template. The cut, material, and details are closely based on the historical parka.
