For over a thousand years, the daruma has been an integral part of Japanese culture and spirituality—a figure full of meaning and character. Its roots reach deep into Zen Buddhism, inspired by the Indian monk Bodhidharma, who, according to legend, meditated motionless in front of a wall for nine years. From this story emerged a powerful symbol of willpower and perseverance.
“Fall seven times, get up eight times” – 七転び八起き (Nanakorobi Yaoki)
The daruma symbolizes the tireless pursuit of a goal—no matter how often one fails. It is accompanied by a traditional gesture: Whenever one wishes or achieves a goal, one paints the first eye. Once this goal is achieved, the second follows—as a sign of gratitude. Thus, the daruma becomes a silent witness to your determination.
Crafted in Takasaki, the birthplace of the traditional daruma, each figure is carefully handcrafted from papier-mâché. The weighted base allows the daruma to stand upright after each fall—a physical reflection of its inner spirit.
The Omoto Denim version features a deep indigo blue—naturally dyed—and comes with a small cap and matching denim stand. A tribute to Japanese craftsmanship and a quiet statement of steadfastness.
