The "SS39673 Special Edition Gauguin Woodcut Mystic Hawaiian Shirt" by Sun Surf is based on a rare vintage Hawaiian shirt from Kamehameha from the late 1940s. The brand belonged to the Kamehameha Garment Company, which was originally founded as a supplier for military clothing and later developed into one of the most important manufacturers of Hawaiian clothing.
The "Gauguin Woodcut" motif is one of the most famous designs in vintage Aloha shirt history. It is based on woodcuts by the French artist Paul Gauguin, which were combined by textile designer John Meigs to create a large-scale all-over pattern. The Mystic version is characterized by the depiction of a standing female figure in the center of the motif. To this day, different variants of this design exist, the exact origin of which is not clearly understood.
The shirt is made from Rayon Habutae, a fine filament rayon with a smooth surface and flowing drape. The discharge print selectively removes color from the already dyed fabric, creating a soft, deep-looking pattern that is closely integrated with the material. The elaborate multi-color design is particularly enhanced by this process.
With the Special Edition, Sun Surf reconstructs rare historical Aloha shirts based on original templates, adopting the characteristic materials, printing processes, and details of the time.
