The "IHSH-409-IB 19 oz. Selvedge Denim CPO Shirt Indigo/Black" from IRON HEART is based on a design that the US Navy introduced in the 1930s as the "Shirt, Wool, Blue" for its Chief Petty Officers – initially made of wool flannel with one, later two chest pockets. After the war, the shirt made its way into civilian wardrobes via Army-Navy surplus stores, before Iron Heart now reinterprets it in heavy Japanese denim.
The 19oz heavy fabric is woven from a rope-dyed indigo warp and a sulfur-black-dyed, twisted weft yarn in a twill weave. In rope dyeing, the thread only absorbs the color on the outside, the core remains light – this creates the almost black basic tone, which washes out with visible contrast at points of friction. Sanforized and industrially pre-washed once, the fabric will hardly shrink with proper care.
The CPO cut features oversized copper snap fasteners and twill tape-lined hand warmer pockets. A straight back yoke and a hem with side vents allow freedom of movement without sacrificing the boxy, slightly elongated silhouette of the original.
