The “LK-019 Desert Boots Sand” by JOHN LOFGREN draw on a shoe design that originated in Cairo during the Second World War. British and South African soldiers had light, sand-colored suede boots with crepe soles made in the Khan el-Khalili bazaar – a practical alternative to heavy military footwear in North Africa.
Nathan Clark, a descendant of the Clarks shoemaking family, discovered these boots while serving in Burma. After returning home, he adopted the idea and developed it into the Clarks Desert Boot. He introduced the model at the Chicago Shoe Fair in 1949, and it was officially launched on the market in 1950.
The LK-019 translates this early desert boot silhouette into a robust version made in Japan using Japanese suede. The construction is significantly more elaborate than that of classic desert boots: stitch-down, double and partially triple stitching, a steel shank in the shaft, and a padded leather footbed meet a Japanese crepe rubber sole.
