Burg & Schild x MotivMfg Donnie Chinese Work Jacket

The limited "Donnie Chinese Work Jacket" was created in close collaboration with MotivMfg – a project that developed very naturally. Motiv has been with us for a while, especially because of their sure sense of materials, their clear ideas, and their approach to templates, which never stops at mere reproduction.

The starting point was an original Chinese work jacket from Kay's archive, which he found years ago in Japan. These so-called "Bleu de Chine" jackets were originally simple Chinese workwear and found their way to southern France via trade routes in the early 20th century. Especially in Marseille, they were adopted by sailors and dockworkers: light, robust, flexible, and significantly better suited for the Mediterranean climate than heavy European work jackets.

Motiv takes up this classic form and reinterprets it – with adapted proportions, calmer balance, and its own take on the details.

Made from Donegal denim, the fabric shows the irregular, lively structure of typical Donegal weaves. Small colored nubs ("Neps") and fine core threads create a textured surface that develops further depth with wear. Robust, dense, and textured – somewhere between tweed and denim.

The name "Donnie" refers to Donnie Yen, known from the "Ip Man" series, in which similar jacket silhouettes repeatedly appear – as a cinematic evolution of classic Chinese workwear.

All MotivMfg garments are produced in-house by a small production team. The high level of craftsmanship and careful processing enable detailed and durable collections, anatomical cuts, and unique fits.
