The western shirt originated in the late 19th century, when ranchers and cowboys on the American frontier valued functionality and durability. Features like snap fasteners, pointed shoulder yokes, and breast pockets were introduced to meet the demands of rugged everyday wear—the snap fasteners made it easier to fasten, even with gloves, and the shoulder yoke reinforced the shirt's most stressed area.
In the mid-20th century, the Western shirt evolved from practical workwear to a fashion item adopted by musicians, urbanites, and subcultures. The "sawtooth" design, introduced in 1955, achieved particularly iconic status. In the 1960s, the classic Western sawtooth shirt was reinterpreted in Oxford cloth, combining its rugged heritage with modern style.
