The "Renzo Loose Chino Gabardine" by Tela Genova translates the wide, straight leg cut of the Renzo chino into a gabardine version. The chino itself originated in the 19th century as lightweight uniform trousers for European colonial armies and was also worn by civilians via the US Army, in a generous silhouette characteristic of early chino models. Tela Genova is managed by Casitalia SRL, which has developed the company, founded in 1982, towards denim craftsmanship and workwear since its acquisition by the Caucci family in 2010.
Gabardine was developed and patented by Thomas Burberry at the end of the 19th century: a densely woven twill made from tightly twisted yarns, whose tight weave makes the fabric wind and water repellent without coating it – unlike the rubberized raincoats of the time. The material became known, among other things, through British military coats and early polar expeditions, which relied on its durability.
In the cotton version, as processed here, the gabardine's typical, slightly diagonally ribbed surface with a subtle sheen is evident, which diminishes with washing and wear.
