The "SS39675 Special Edition Sankin Kotai Hawaiian Shirt" by Sun Surf is based on a rare vintage Hawaiian shirt by Betty Higgins from the early 1950s. The brand emerged after World War II as a custom tailor for women's fashion and was featured in the famous Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki. In addition to elaborately crafted garments made with Japanese fabrics, a few men's shirts were also part of the range. Many of the preserved pieces show oriental motifs, as does this model.
The design depicts "Sankin Kotai" – the historical obligation of Japanese daimyo to regularly travel between their domains and Edo. The detailed procession with long lines of escorts and horses takes up a motif that was frequently used during the Orientalism boom in post-war America. Japanese imagery thus became an integral part of many high-quality Aloha shirts.
The shirt is made from Rayon Habutae, a fine filament rayon with a smooth surface and flowing drape. The elaborately designed overprint brings out the numerous color layers and fine details of the motif. The processing on rayon creates the typical depth that characterizes many original Hawaiian shirts of this period.
The Sun Surf Special Edition reconstructs rare vintage originals with their historical materials, patterns, and details. This model showcases a side of Aloha shirt history that goes far beyond tropical motifs.
