Anonymous Ism's "Uneven Dyed Crew Socks" are named after the dyeing technique that gives their surface its characteristic, slightly mottled depth: The cotton is dyed in the sliver, i.e., before the fiber is spun into yarn. This distributes the color unevenly within the individual fibers, and only during knitting does the irregular, tonal pattern emerge that gives the model its name. Anonymous Ism, a Japanese sock label founded in 2002, processes yarns of this type on low-gauge circular knitting machines from the 1970s, for which spare parts are now hard to come by.

The blend of cotton, nylon, and elastane is designed for everyday wear: cotton provides softness and absorbency, the small percentage of nylon increases abrasion resistance at the heel and toe, and elastane maintains the shape over the calf.
