Jackman's "Waffle Knit Cap" uses significantly thicker cotton yarn than is typical for ordinary waffle knit.
Waffle knit became known primarily through the US military as thermal underwear: The "Undershirt, Extreme Cold Weather" of the 1960s and 70s relied on this very structure to provide additional warmth to soldiers under their other clothing – the raised squares trap air and act as insulation.
Thanks to the thickened yarn and specially adapted knitting machines, the result from Jackman is significantly heavier and bulkier than a conventional waffle knit – a heavyweight knit with a correspondingly dense, soft feel.
Compared to the previous model JM6605, this version is shorter.
