The US Navy's flight jacket, introduced in 1940, was initially called M-422, then G-1 from 1950. Based on the A-2 type worn by the USAAF, it received the characteristic pockets and ribbed cuffs. For more functionality, movement pleats on the back and a warm lambskin collar were added.
As part of the Buzz Rickson's x William Gibson collection, the "BR80597 G-1 Jacket" comes in deep black. The originally brown horse leather is dyed black through an elaborate "pigment finishing". The brown core appears in the stressed areas when worn and gives the jacket a unique patina.
The idea for an all-black collection was inspired by Buzz Rickson's fictional black MA-1 jacket, which the science fiction author designed for his protagonist in his book "Pattern Recognition". Buzz Rickson's brought the never-before-seen jacket to life and laid the foundation for the unique militaria collaboration "Type Black".
